What to do when you've had enough of sitting still

Our favourites, from the gate. Plus the house rules, which are short.

From the door

Walks and days out

  • Win Hill loop

    3 h · Moderate

Straight from the gate, up through the woods, along the ridge and back by the reservoir. Bring the map from the boot room.

  • Mam Tor and the Great Ridge

    4 h · Moderate

The classic. Drive 10 minutes to Castleton, walk the ridge, reward yourself in the village afterwards.

  • Ladybower by bike

    Half day · Easy

Flat, traffic-free and beautiful. Bikes for hire at the visitor centre; we'll drop you there.

  • Chatsworth

    Full day

House, garden and farm shop. 35 minutes by car. Go on a weekday if you can.

  • The good pub

    Evening

Twelve minutes on foot, open fire, dogs under the tables, food worth the walk back in the dark. Book on Fridays.

  • Caverns

    2 h

Four show caves within 15 minutes for rainy days — and there will be rainy days.

House rules

  • Check-in from 15:00. If you'll arrive after 21:00, tell us and we'll set up the key safe. Check-out by 10:30 — later if the room isn't needed that day; just ask.
  • Breakfast 08:00–09:30. Order the night before if you'd like something cooked; we'll leave a card in your room.
  • Dogs are welcome in the Garden Room and the Byre by prior arrangement, £15 a night. Not on the beds, please, and not left alone in the room.
  • Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and high chairs are free; ask when booking.
  • Smoking and vaping outside only, away from open windows.
  • Quiet after 22:00 in the house. The Byre has no neighbours, so the rule is looser there.
  • Parking is free; the EV charger is £0.35 per kWh, billed at check-out.

Booking and cancellation

A deposit of one night holds the booking. Cancel free of charge up to 14 days before arrival; within 14 days the deposit is kept unless we can re-let the room, in which case we refund it. Whole-house bookings: 28 days.

Accessibility

The Garden Room is on the ground floor with a level entrance and a walk-in shower, though the doorway is 75 cm. The rest of the house has steps and the staircase is original and steep. Tell us what you need and we'll be honest about whether it works.
